FAQs

How does The Good Us make a difference?

Did you know that the fashion industry produces 20% of global wastewater and 10% of global carbon emissions? That is more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.

As consumers worldwide buy more clothes, the growing market for cheap items and new styles is taking a toll on the environment. If the fashion sector continues on its current trajectory, that share of the carbon budget could jump to 26% by 2050, according to a 2017 report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Here are some facts about the fashion industry:

  • On average, people bought 60% more garments in 2014 than they did in 2000, but they only kept the clothes for half as long

  • The equivalent of one garbage truck full of clothes is burned or dumped in a landfill every second

  • In total, up to 85% of textiles go to landfills each year

  • Zara puts out 24 collections per year, while H&M offers between 12 and 16

  • Washing clothes releases 500,000 tonnes of microfibers into the ocean each year – the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles

  • Many of those fibers are polyester, a plastic found in an estimated 60% of garments

  • Producing polyester releases two to three times more carbon emissions than cotton, and polyester does not break down in the ocean

  • Overall, microplastics are estimated to compose up to 31% of plastic pollution in the ocean

At The Good Us, we rate clothes on their eco-friendliness and thereby create transparency. All our shopping decisions have tremendous power: With every single purchase made, we can support purpose-driven brands over "conventional" ones. When a critical mass of shoppers favors ethical products over conventional ones, we create a movement of change and pressure the market into becoming more transparent and ultimately to change towards more ethical & sustainable production processes.

How do I use the Chrome Extension?

The Good Us Chrome Extension is a sustainability scoring tool that helps you take smarter and more conscious shopping decisions whenever you are after a new piece for your wardrobe. It will become your loyal shopping assistant on all things fashion:

  1. Download the free chrome extension from the Google Chrome Store to your laptop.

  2. Then just browse for products online like you usually do. Say you are looking for a new knit jumper and you are searching on Topshop. As soon as you click on a knit jumper (i.e. open the product page), the Shopping Assistant automatically tells you how well this jumper scores in terms of its sustainability.

  3. Feel informed about every purchase you make and help save the planet, one purchase at a time.

How do you rate products?

Together with University College London, we developed an algorithm that estimates the sustainability impact of clothes. The aim of our algorithm is to determine a product's eco-friendliness. We collect and use many different pieces of product and brand information to estimate each product‘s lifecycle impact with regards to 1) environmental degradation, 2) global warming, 3) worker, and 4) animal welfare.
